Happy September to all! I am so far behind on blogging for the library, please bear with me.

Probably the biggest news for Oklahoma this summer was the extreme heat and drought. We continue to pray for rain, a really good long soaking rain. A lot of people enjoyed coming into the library this summer not only for the reading materials & computers we have to offer, but also just to hang out & cool off.

These past few days have been very nice with temps in the 80's! We are loving it. Won't be long until Pam will start on her tirade about always being cold. Haha. She and I are always fussing about the temps...she is usually too cold, I am usually too hot.

School has started which means we are really busy in the afternoons with the kids coming over for materials to check out and/or a place to hang out for awhile. We always welcome the kids and would rather see them spending their time here than on the streets.

NETBOOKS!!
We now have netbooks for the public to check out! For those that do not know what a netbook is, it is actually just a small laptop computer. We do have some guidelines as to who can check out the netbooks, such as you must be a patron in good standing, have no outstanding fines, have a good history with us and must be over 18 yrs of age, just to name a few of the rules. For more information on checking out a netbook you may call the library or stop by and read our full Netbook Checkout Agreement.

LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE NATIONAL/OKLAHOMA WRITING COMPETITION

How has an author's work--novel, nonfiction, poetry--changed your view of the world or yourself? What did you learn about yourself that you didn't realize before reading the author's work? Don't write a book report. The author already wrote the book and knows what happened. What the author doesn't know is how you reacted while reading the book. Write about that--your response in a reflective, personal letter to the author! That is the LAL writing challenge.

Each year, LAL awards thousands of dollars through state and national prizes, as well as LAL library grants. Last year, 70,000 young people entered. For more information on how you as a young reader or how your students can enter, browse through this website (www.lettersaboutliterature.org) for sample letters and the how-to-enter guidelines and coupon.

This is an exciting oppurtunity for kids ages 4th grade thru 12th grade to write a letter to an author, (living or dead) explaining how the author's work impacted the student's life. LAL awards prizes on both the National and State levels. State winners will receive a $50 Target gift card as well as cash prizes from the Oklahoma Center for the Book. State winners will advance to the national competition.

National winners will receive a $500 Target gift card, plus each will secure a $10,000 LAL Reading Promotion Grant in their name for his or her community or school library. The National Honorable mention winners will receive a $100 Target gift card and and will secure a $1,000 Reading Promotion Grant in their name for his or her school or community library.

Again, for national guidelines, more information, and to download entry forms, log onto www.lettersaboutliterature.org. We also have postcards with this information, website, etc. on them that you can pick up here at the library.

About a month ago, the library received over 300 barely used or brand new children's books as a donation! We were so excited to have theses books. Most were scholastic readers and out of all of these books, we only already had about 10 of them. Also the same family who donated these books gave offered the library a great price on some DVD's, again a lot of them had never been opened! The Friend's of the Library bought 100 of the DVD's for the library. We truly appreciate the generosity of this family! So some in & check out the great new selection!

Be watching for the upcoming annual pumpkin decorating contest that we will be having in October!

Until next time....

Good day to all! Have you all been enjoying the crazy windy weather? I like the lower humidity levels, but we sure could use some rain! If this weather pattern keeps up, our state is going to dry up and blow away!

Our Easter reading challenge is well under way here at the library. We started the challenge last week on April 5th. For every 3 books a child, age up to 12, reads or has read to them, they get to pick out a prize from the Easter goody box once they bring the book(s) back. For the older kids, they only have to read 1 book as long as it is a chapter book. When the kids check out their books, IF it is a "Golden Prize" book they get to pick out one of the bigger prizes. The Golden Egg books were randomly picked and marked in our computer system so the kids have no idea which books are the prize books until they check one out. So far we have already given away a large stuffed bunny rabbit, a large stuffed chick and a large chocolate bunny with a book. We still have the remainder of this week and all of next week for the challenge. So get those kiddos in here to check out some books! I will be posting some pictures of the winners when it is all over.

Family Literacy Night

On Tuesday Feb. 15th Haynie Public library hosted a Family Literacy night at the library. Allison Young, a Pre-K4 teacher came and spoke to the group and presented a slide show on how to make reading skills at home fun for the whole family and how to get your kids interested in reading. Kerri McLinn with Oklahoma Department of Libraries was also on hand to observe and to hand out books to the children who attended. Nine adults and twelve children attended this event. Punch and cookies were served, with the Friends of the Library donating the cookies.

All I can say is WOW! What beautiful snow we have had! I know, most of you are happy to see the end of it. Me personally? Well, I am kind of ready for spring...I would like one more round of blizzard and then I will be ready for spring. I know...go ahead and throw those snowballs at me...my husband is right there with you sun loving people.

Just one of the many downsides of the heavy amounts of snow is the library being closed. We were closed the entire first week of February. Finally we were able to reopen on Tuesday, the 8th, only to have to close again the next day due to more snowfall. But we reopened again on Thursday and are now going strong.

Talk about mass chaos when we finally reopened! On a normal working week we have about 450 transactions. On the Tuesday we reopened, on that day only, we had a total of 481 transactions! So needless to say we were VERY busy! I was saved from all of this, due to some previously scheduled appointments I could not miss, but Debbie, Ashley & Pam did a great job and worked very hard getting things all back in order. Debbie even took a few pics of the loaded down desk and book carts. The outside book drop was completely full, which we pretty much expected. And of course no overdue fees were charged due to the bad weather and patrons not being able to get in to return their books.

On Thursday, February 10th, we had the "Girl's Day Out" Valentine drawing put on by Friends of the Library. Winner of the Grand Prize basket was Wendy Stapp; the second place basket of goodies went to Cynthia Seaton and third place basket winner was Butch Terrell. A HUGE thank you to all that sold tickets and especially to all that bought tickets! Over $700 was raised!

Next Tuesday night we are having a Family Literacy program put on by Oklahoma Department of Libraries starting at 6:00. You can call the library for more information.

Friends of the Library Meetings have been moved from the first Wednesday of each month to the 4th Wednesday of each month. So our next meeting is February 23rd at noon at the library meeting room. We encourage you to attend and become a member of FOL!

Stop in the library and see us anytime we are open! Our hours are from 8:30 to 5:30 Tuesday thru Friday and from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

Enjoy the pics below!

Until next time....the Library Lady! :)

I sure hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with loved ones.

We have been busy here at the library. Santa Clause stopped in on Tuesday afternoon. After the children talked to Santa and one of his elves handed out the goody bags, they were served cookies and punch. We had a fairly good turnout and lots of fun.

Friends of the Library who helped out by bringing cookies and/or serving the refreshments are Jean Bradburn, Donna Mobley, Gena Smith, Judy Sikes, Lois Cox and Carol Hunter. Also a big thank you to Jim Greff and Kendra Jackson for "helping out".

Our December reading project started off this week. For every 3 books a child checks out, reads and brings back to the library, he or she gets to pick an ornie on our tree to reveal what they won. The choices are a book, a toy, a stuffed animal or cash.
Brad and Jean Bradburn donated these pill box type ornaments that open up, to the library and came up with this great idea! So far this week, the kiddos have been having a ball getting to choose an ornie and get a prize, all just for reading books!
Thank you's go out to Brad and Jean Bradburn for cash prizes and the ornies and Heather, Logan and Morgan Lunceford for books donated.

The library will be closed on Friday the 24th, for Christmas Eve and on Saturday, the 25th for Christmas. We will reopen on Tuesday the 28th.

I have had my camera handy, taking lots of pictures here at the library.....enjoy!

Knowing your Librarians

I have slacked off on the posts I have been doing on getting to know your librarians. A few months back we first introduced our newest member of our team, Ashley Allen, then we introduced you to Debbie Clonts. Now I am going to tell a little about myself, Carol Hunter.

I came to work for the Haynie Library in June of 2007. I never thought I would be lucky enough to work in a library, mainly because of my loud mouth. Well, all I can say is we are still working on that. Haha!

My husband Rick and I moved here 8 1/2 yrs ago from Davis, OK. Rick took a transfer from OGE to move here, because at the time his parents were living here. We have one daughter, Mendi Jackson who lives in Norman with her husband, Chad, son Hunter and daughter, Grace.

I grew up in Healdton, OK and graduated from school there in 1978. I worked in data processing and in the Trust dept at a bank in Ardmore for 11 years before moving here. I love crafting, especially paper crafts, sewing, gardening and spoiling my cat Chevy. I also enjoy riding the Harley with my husband. What I love most about working here at the library is getting to know the people here in Prague and getting to see all of the sweet kids that come in.

I feel fortunate to work in such a beautiful library. Stop in and see us!
Hope everyone is enjoying these cooler temps as much as I am.

Last week we had Oklahoma author Keith Remer in the library for a book signing on his book, The Hiding Place of Thunder. You can read about the book & the author on his website at
http://www.keithremer.com/. Below is a picture of Mr. Remer with local couple David & Tina Greer at the booksigning.

Time seems to be flying by here at the library. We are already discussing ideas for Thanksgiving and Christmas both. Just doesn't seem time for the holidays already!

What we have going on right now for the month of October is our 2nd Annual Pumpkin Decorating contest. We will be accepting pumpkins from Oct 1st thru Oct 22nd. There are three age groups: Children, Teen and Adult. Ages 5 to 105!
Rules are, first and foremost: NO HOLES IN PUMPKIN PLEASE! Use glue, hot glue, modeling clay, paint or any other prop that fits your pumpkin. For more information you may call us at the library @ 567-4013. We have really nice prizes (better than last year) for each age group, so please bring in your decorated pumpkin as soon as possible!

Each Wednesday during the month of October we have been having children's story time. Monica Johnson, who brings her two daughters, Haley & Harley to story time each week, has been so nice to donate cookies and Koolaid pouches for all the children. We are very gratful to Miss Monica for her genorosity. Below are some pictures from the past couple of weeks.
We are working on possibly getting the American Red Cross to come and teach a class on babysitting. Several teens have expressed an interest in this. If and when we get this class, we will be posting the details in the paper.

We will be having another book signing on Wednesday, October 27th from 5 pm until 7 pm. Oklahoma author, Mosezickle Ray Pitts, Jr., who is the author of Sweet Home Acres will be here signing copies of his book. You can read about this book at http://www.sweethomeacres.org/ .

I would like to remind anyone who is already a member of Friends of the Library, or is interested in joining that we meet at noon on the first Wednesday of each month here in the library meeting room. Attendance has been low & we could really use some new (and old) members to join us in helping to support our library. You are welcome to bring your lunch. Contact the library for more information on becoming a FOL member.

So come on in and find you a few books to get you through this extremem heat.
Things have quieted down some here at the library with the ending of the summer reading program and now the kids and parents are all getting ready for back to school. As soon as school starts next week, things will be picking back up as they do every year at this time.

The grand prize winners in the summer reading program were Blake Tosh and Lydia Dunn. Blake read approximately 300 books and Lydia read 281 for the months of June and July. Below are pictures of each one with gifts they received. Lydai got a Dr. Suess backpack full of Dr. Suess books, and Blake received some Army gifts such as a cap, mug, nice pen/pencil set among other things. Lydia's gifts were donated by Morgan & Logan Lunceford and Blake's gifts were donated by Staff Sergeant Jon T. Buchanan of the Army recruiting office. Both kids deserve a huge round of applause, as well as the generous people who donated the gifts!
The Social Security Administration will be here on August 25, 2010 from 10 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. to answer any questions you may have concerning social security. This is a good time to come on out & get those questions answered.

Coming soon, we will have Oklahoma author, Keith Remer here in the library. Mr. Remer is author of The Hiding Place of Thunder. Keith Remer retired after thirty-two years of military service to live his dreams. He writes his novels and screenplays, tends his ranch, and teaches leadership and history courses as an adjunct professor. Keith lives with his lovely wife, Carrie, and their son Bryan in Oklahoma. Their daughter Sloan is a student at the University of Oklahoma. Here is the link to Keith Remer's website:

It has been too long since I last updated this blog. I would like to blame it on the hot and humid weather, like I blame everything else on, but it's not like I sit outside and type this up. Oh well.

We have had a very busy summer so far. The month of June had us busy with the summer reading program which this years theme was "Make A Splash". We had a record number of children's books checked out for the month.

For the reading program, each kid that participated had to set a goal on how many books they wanted to read and as they met parts of the goal, they got to pick out prizes with the last prize being a ticket to the water fun day we had for the grand finale. On that day, June 30th, the library rented two inflatable water slides for the kids to play on. We had them set up at the Prague park for all the kids to enjoy. They had to have their tickets to get to attend. All of the tickets then went into a box for a drawing for prizes. In the end every kid got to go home with a gift. From the amount of hugs and thank you's we received from the kids, you can tell it was a huge success!

Happy Spring to all! Most of us here at Haynie Library are happy to welcome the warmer temperatures. But not me...yes I am the fuddy duddy who prefers cooler temps. Just ask any of the other co-workers, especially Pam who I freeze out by adjusting the a/c while she is not looking.

We have a had a lot of new books and a few events, since I last updated the blog, so hopefully I can get you updated today.

STAR READER

We recently recognized a young man in our local newspaper for being such an avid reader. Blake Tosh rarely misses a day at the library and always checks out his limit of three books per visit. Blake is 11 years old and a sixth grade student at Lighthouse Christian Academy. He remembers the first book he ever read from the Haynie Library, Fling, from the Hank the Cowdog collection. His favorite author is Mary Pope Osborne.

When asked why reads so much, his answer was simply "Because I like to."

When we went back and checked Blake's history with the library, he has read approximately 780 books in the past couple of years. So Blake obviously does like to read.

Not only is he good at reading, Blake always has wonderful manners when he visits the library. Blake's hobbies are riding horses, riding his bike, playing basketball and football, and fishing with his uncle. Blake says he would like to be a diesel mechanic when he grows up. When asked what is the best thing about the Haynie library (which the staff was sure would be the librarians), Blake's answer was the Magic Tree House books and the Hank the Cowdog books.

Blake is the son of Connie Tosh and has one brother, Loren Tosh.

CLOWNS COME TO TOWN

Back in April we had 2 clowns, Dave & Cherie Gregg, from the Ringling Brothers circus to come visit us promoting their "Read with Ringling Brothers" program. This was held at the Prague school auditorium. The kids not only enjoyed the performances of magic tricks, book reading, they also each received a clown nose.

When kids ages 2-12 read 5 books they receive a free ticket for the circus which will be at the BOK Center in Tulsa June 10-13.

Of course everyone's opinion is different, but I hope you will at least give them a try. Here are a few links that you might enjoy about Jeannette Walls & her books.
I would like to blame it on "the holidays", you know...that term everyone uses as an excuse for why they are late on getting things done. BUT, that is not the case here....I simply just did not get "around to it". Again, another term used by many as an excuse for not getting things done. But I am not using this an excuse, I really have not been able to find where to purchase "a round to it". Ha Ha. Okay, enough lame funnies.

THIS & THAT.....

Sharon Phillips, nutrition education assistant with the OSU extension office will be hosting a nutrition class on Febuary 9th at 1 pm at the library meeting room. This is free & open to the public.

We have lots of 2009 federal income tax forms available here at the library. We were told we would not be getting any state forms, but ended up receiveing some master copies so we can make a copy of those for you.

We have a gentleman from the census bureau that is here every Wednesday @ 3.00 pm thru the end of March, giving the testing for census workers. If you are interested in working for the census you can visit their website for more info at http://www.census.gov/

KNOW YOUR LIBRAIANS:
A few months ago we introduced Ashley, our newest assisant here at the library & told a little about her. I thought we might as well introduce you to the other employees here at Haynie Public Library and tell a little about them. This time we are introducing Debbie (Johnson) Clonts. She has been with us for one year now.

Debbie was raised in Prague and graduated high school in 1974. She is married to Wayne Clonts and has one son, Eric who lives in Prague and one daughter Angie who lives in Hendrix, OK with her husband Mike and baby boy, Kanyon. Debbie is an avid reader of Christain Inspirational fiction and a member of the Assembly of God church here in Prague. Other than reading and being active in her church, she enjoys singing, song writting , playing the piano and guitar. Most of all Debbie loves playing with her only grandchild, Kanyon.

RECENTLY ADDED BOOKS.... NON-FICTION:

Grits Friends are Forevah - A Southern Style Celebration of Women by Deborah Ford

Dawn's Prelude by Tracie Peterson

The Pioneer Woman Cooks - Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl by Ree Drummond
My personal review on this cookbook.... Not only did I purchase this book for myself, I also purchased 2 more copies for Christmas presents. I highly recommend it, along with her award winning blog http://www.thepioneerwoman.com/ She has many, many more recipes on her blog, and like in her book, she has step by step instructions with pictures, along with her entertaining blogs, wonderful photography & also has giveaways from time to time. But what makes this book even more special to me is that Ree is an Oklahoma gal! She lives in the northeastern area of Oklahoma on a large working cattle ranch with her husband and four children. Check it out when you can!

Shirley Rae Phillips passed away on October 9, 2009. Shirley was our current Friends of the Library president. She also held other past positions on FOL. Shirley was very instrumental in the fund raising and building of our new library. She put forth a lot of work in our annual book/mum sale, our annual garage/book sales & other fundraising projects for the benefit of the library. Not only was she a hard worker on these many projects, Shirley was fun to be around, always laughing, sharing stories with us, brainstorming & advising on future ideas for the library and making any project "fun". She was a very classy lady & very dear to her FOL family.
Words cannot express how much we will be missing her here at Haynie Public Library.

Pumpkins, Books & Nutrition

We are just two days away from choosing our pumpkin decorating contest winners! So far there are 10 entries and it will be hard for our judges to choose a winner. We have some very creative ones to choose from. We will also pick a peoples choice, so come on down and vote for your favorite pumpkin! You may vote for one pumpkin one time per day.

The Library will be giving out candy to trick or treater's on Friday afternoon during the city wide trick or treating. Come on by and bring your little ghosts and goblins!

We also still have a few pumpkins left for sale along with some new & gently used books. The money raised from the sale of these will go towards buying more books for the library. The pumpkins range in price from $2.00 for small to $4.50 for the large ones. The books are $1.50 for hard back and all others are $1.00. Can't beat a deal like that! Plus you will be supporting your local library!

My name is Ashley Allen. I graduated from Mounds, OK in 2003. We moved to Woodward after we were married in October 2005. I have been the Youth Services Librarian for Woodward Public Library for just short of four years. I love working with kids and encouraging them to read! My husband Shane Allen is from Paden, Ok. Ever since he moved away in third grade he has wanted to move back home, so we decided to pack up and move east! I'm excited to get to know people in and around the community and hope to be an asset to the city of Prague. So if you are in the library be sure and stop by and say hi!

Library Happenings

Summer is winding down here at the Haynie Library and we are looking forward to a fantastic fall season. School started here today and hopefully we will have lots of kids visiting the library after school hours whether it is to check out the latest books, to do research for school papers or to just simply unwind by spending some time on the computers.

Recently we had some video games donated to us. I am not familair with these types of games because, without revealing my exact age, I will just say I am from the atari & pac man days. Just to name a few we have available for checkout are:

Delta Force Land Warrior
Tomb Raider Chronicles
Myst III Exile
Indianna Jones and the Emperor's Tomb
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Coming Soon:

We have many new books ordered that will be arriving soon. Only a few are listed below:

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
I am a Rainbow by Dolly Parton and Heath Sheffield
The Eleventh Victim by Nancy Grace
Flush by Carol Hiaasen
A Dream To Call My Own by Tracie Peterson
Her Inheritence Forever by Lyn Cote
Intervention by Terri Blackstock

Basic Computer Classes

We are excited to announce that we are going to be offering basic computer classes for the public. These will be one on one and there will be no charge. The class will consist of how to use a computer, access the internet, sign up for a free email account, print, etc.

To sign up you need to call the library at 567-4013 to schedule your class.

Friends of the Library Anyone wishing to join FOL can pick up an application at the library. An individual membership fee is only $10.00 per year and a family membership is $15.00 per year. FOL meets at noon on the first Wednesday of every month here at the library. It is a great organization that has helped the library to buy new books, computers, accesories for the libary & many other things needed.

Thanks for dropping in!

Until next time ....

"The Library Lady"

And, by the end of August, I tend to still have a list of books. Unread.

Perhaps I'm too ambitious - perhaps the list is too long. Or, perhaps, the books themselves are too long. This week, Anne Trubeck posted a list of four short postmodern books to read this summer on her Signatures blog. (This list is, itself, adapted from a longer list of "61 essential postmodern reads" posted in Jacket Copy, a blog of the LA Times).

Now, I haven't read any of the books Trubeck suggests. In fact, I've only read a couple of the books on the longer list - postmodern isn't really my thing. So, I have taken it upon myself, as the Library Lady, to make my own short list of short books. If you need an intellectual-looking but actually readable book for August, try one of these. You won't pull a muscle trying to lift them.

Northanger Abbey, by Jane Austen - Please don't write Austen off as girly. Yes, her books are about women, but Northanger is hilariously written, full of pokes at gothic literature, and very easy to read. Bonus points for reading it with a British accent.

The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne - One of the books on that postmodern list I have read. It wasn't what I expected. If you once hated it because your high school English teacher forced you to read it...try it again.

The Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare - Again, if you were force-fed Shakespeare in high school, try one of his comedies. Shakespeare really is a funny guy, once your get to know him. Be sure to get a copy with notes to explain some of the old language.

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, by Alexander Solzhenitsyn - A very short book (especially for a Russian novel) chronicling one day in the life of a prisoner in a Soviet gulag. Bitingly realistic and based on Solzhenitsyn's own experiences in a prison camp, Ivan Denisovich will stay with you long after you close the book.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - For the mystery lover in all of us. The Sherlock Holmes of the original novels is a bit edgier than the versions of the movies. Read any of the novels and impress your friends (or you could just watch the Wishbone version, but really. Read them).

Ivanhoe, by Sir Walter Scott - One of my favorite books, ever. I learned more about the Crusades from this book than any of my history books. And some of the dialogue is just killing. Read it just so you can quote Wamba the Fool.

So there you go. Next time you're at the beach, pull one of these out and watch the expressions around you. Or just check out the newest John Sandford or Nora Roberts and tell everyone that you're analyzing the assumptions and biases revealed in the development of interpersonal relationships in the modern novel. Or whatever.

July New Books and Coming Events

Adult Fiction

Wednesday, July 22, at 10 a.m. - Puppet show by Barbara and Blair Jones

Wednesday, July 29, at 10 a.m. - Come on an adventure with the brave mouse Despereaux! "The Tale of Despereaux" is the story of three unlikely heroes - a misfit mouse who prefers reading books to eating them, an unhappy rat who schemes to leave the darkness of the dungeon, and a bumbling servant girl with cauliflower ears - whose fates are intertwined with that of the castle's princess. Because of the movie's length, it is best for children ages five and up. Vision Bank is providing popcorn, so your child should just bring a drink (in a non-glass container with a lid), something to sit on and a sense of adventure!

Friday, July 31 - Last day to turn in reading logs to win Gershwin! Keep reading and bring the list of books you've read in June and July before then. (Ages 6-12)

Book Review: "The Lost City of Z"

In 1925, explorer Percy Fawcett headed into the Amazonian jungle to search for evidence of a lost civilization he was convinced had existed along the banks of the world's greatest river. He never returned, and his disappearance became as great a mystery as the civilization he had sought.

More than eighty years later, a reporter followed the explorer's journey, using Fawcett's notes and the newest technology to search for clues about what happened to the Fawcett and his companions. In The Lost City of Z, author David Grann weaves together Fawcett's story and his own to craft a work of suspense and adventure out of one of the great mysteries of archaeology. Through his story of Fawcett's search, Grann explores the human fascination with and dread of the unknown and the consequences of obsession. The book is aptly subtitled A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon.

Grann's work reveals the historical significance of an explorer who, in his own time, was as well-known as Ernest Shackleton and Henry Stanley, but who has been largely forgotten in the years since his disappearance. The book traces the development of Fawcett's obsession with finding a lost civilization - one he referred to only as "Z" - from its beginning in his days in the British army and his first expedition in South America, when he helped establish the border between Bolivia and Brazil. Grann draws information from Fawcett's diary, the logs of his expeditions, the reports of his companions and previously unknown sources held by his descendents. He details the dangers Fawcett faced including pit vipers, anacondas, piranhas, electric eels and hundereds of species of deadly insects while also considering the motivations of and relationships between Fawcett and his companions.

Grann's journalistic style makes Z an easy and enjoyable read. His use of primary sources to insert quoations and anecdotes into the story brings the tale to life and helps the reader relate to Fawcett and the colorful personalities he met on his many journies. Reading his story makes the adventure almost as real as a personal trek down the Amazon - only without the insects, snakes and poison frogs.

Free Children's Books from Barnes and Noble

If you have a child in elementary school, you might want to check out Barnes and Noble's summer reading promotion. Children in grades one through six can print out a summer reading journal to record their favorite part of eight books they have read over the summer. After a parent signs the journal, they can take it to the nearest Barnes and Noble (there's a handy store locator on their site) and turn in the journal to get a coupon for a free children's book.

Call me Ishmael. In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. In the beginning.

All those memorable first lines, and all I can come up with is "welcome to the new blog of the Haynie Public Library!"

This is a place for us to keep you up to date on what's going on at the library and in the world: what new books we have in, what events we're holding, what books we recommend, and anything else book-ish or library-ish that we think is interesting.

It's also a place for you, via the comments section, to share your thoughts on the library: books you wish we would get, new authors you think are great, events you'd like us to hold, and - well, anything else book-ish or library-ish that you think is interesting.

So, to start us off, here's an article we thought was interesting. The information on how much children can lose over the summer if they aren't reading is very interesting, and the reading list is great. Most of them are books that have been around for generations of children already and are still worth reading, and there are a few that are newer and worth a look. Also check out the link to Kristof's blog, where he lists his own children's favorite books and his readers can give their input.

Finally, don't forget about our upcoming events! This Wednesday, July 8, we are showing Kung Fu Panda in the meeting room. It's a fun movie about a panda who wants to do great things but has to learn a few lessons before he can achieve his dreams. It's about an hour and a half long, so it's best for children ages 5 and up. Vision Bank is providing popcorn, so bring a drink and a blanket to sit on and be prepared to laugh! Also, we are hosting a book signing on July 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shanna Groves is the daughter of Jim Bartlett, who is the former chief of police here in Prague and is currently a captain with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department. Her book, Lip Reader, is about a young girl who must learn to live with and love her hearing-impaired family. For more information on the book, visit Shanna's blog.
